Σ [sigma]

'Σ [sigma]' is the new album by composer, saxophone player and improviser Antonio Raia.
The first chapter of a trilogy dedicated to Berlin — where Raia spent several weeks recording alongside producer Francesco Donadello in different locations — 'Σ [sigma]' reflects on the relationship between body, space and sound, understood as a performative gesture closely linked to the space that hosts it.
Recorded inside the Wasserturm in Prenzlauer Berg—the oldest water tower in Berlin, built in 1877—'Σ [sigma]' emerged from the encounter between the saxophonist and a space with a powerful acoustic identity. Here, architecture is more than a mere backdrop: it guides, responds, and suggests unexpected pathways, becoming a musical instrument itself—a living membrane of brick that shapes sound and amplifies its spatial and temporal dimensions.

Without overdubs or post-production, every choice made by Raia— where to let the sound resonate, how to allow the space to influence the performance— becomes a performative gesture to which Donadello responds, prioritising listening over technical considerations, helping to reveal the full complexity of the performance.
In Raia's words, “it is not about capturing music, but about inhabiting it, allowing it to emerge as the living residue of gesture. It is about the tension that remains when the gesture comes to an end, what continues to vibrate through space and time”.

A tension mirrored in the album’s artwork by Vasilis Marmatakis, the graphic designer renowned for his collaborations with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos: the musician’s hands merge with fragments of a saxophone, dissolving the boundary between the body, the space and the instrument.
Accompanying the vinyl release as a special feature, a documentary by Antonio Raia and Elio Di Pace follows the recording sessions closely, offering an insight into the complex dialogue between body, sound, and architecture that lies at the heart of the project.
